Do you remember taking long trips by car as a child? Maybe you were coming to Maine, maybe even to Harpswell.

The Harpswell Recycling Center will offer its annual drive-thru shredding service on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. Free to residents, the service will be provided by Shredding On Site, of Bangor, which will have a truck parked behind the center.

Mid Coast-Parkview Health will offer several vaccine clinics for flu shots and COVID-19 boosters in October and November.

Those of us who live and vacation in Harpswell agree we are fortunate to be in such a beautiful place: the peaceful views, the hiking trails, the water access, the outdoor fun. But there are barriers to maintaining that beauty.

Harpswell will hold a Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. While marine debris is typically the responsibility of landowners, on this day, the town will facilitate a collection and drop-off of marine debris to keep its 216 miles of shoreline and its inland waters clean.

Nolan Kalil, of Great Island, a 2023 graduate of Harpswell Coastal Academy, has received a Mitchell Scholarship. At HCA, Kalil earned 12 college credits through the media arts program at Region 10 Technical High School in Brunswick.

The Orr's and Bailey Islands Fire Department has launched a new program to recruit local young people and inspire them to train as first responders.

On the last Saturday in July, the Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell Center hosted a chicken barbecue, a summer tradition for more than 60 years.

On July 26, Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill sponsored by state Rep. Cheryl Golek, D-Harpswell, that will improve safety for students on school buses.

The final tally is in: A total of $25,691 was raised by the Harpswell community in May to buy vehicles for the war-torn city of Chuhuiv, Ukraine.
