Nolan Kalil, of Great Island, a 2023 graduate of Harpswell Coastal Academy, has received a Mitchell Scholarship.

At HCA, Kalil earned 12 college credits through the media arts program at Region 10 Technical High School in Brunswick. In his senior year, he was an assistant to his math teacher at HCA and helped students in eighth grade math classes. For his capstone project, he developed an art program that allowed high school students to create a cooperative wall mural.

He plans to study graphic arts at Southern Maine Community College and go on to a four-year degree program.

The Mitchell Institute awards the scholarships. Named for former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, the institute seeks to unlock the potential of Maine college students so they can contribute to the vitality of their communities. The scholarships are awarded each year to graduates of Maine’s public high schools.

Each recipient receives a $10,000 award in four installments of $2,500 each. The Mitchell Institute also helps recipients navigate college with personal and professional supports.
