I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. I am a contracted deputy for the town of Harpswell. I am also a resident of Harpswell. I have decided to bring back my "Island Law" column, which I last wrote in 2009.

The ledges of Mackerel Cove, draped in kelp and bristling with barnacles, look today much as they did back in the 1930s when my summer friends Dick, Del, and I raced our punts around the cove's bights and promontories.

Almost 15 years ago, my family and I decamped from Brunswick for a year-long sojourn in Ljubljana, Slovenia. While there, we were impressed with the ways in which people generally lived in smaller spaces with less stuff.

Some of the best aspects of the month of May are the increasing variety of seasonal produce and the celebration of Mother's Day. A perfect dessert for this month is coconut beet sorbet, which utilizes fresh, local produce.

It all started when I met Heather Logan. Heather is the director of the Cundy's Harbor Library. During a discussion one day, I asked her if she had a favorite recipe.

We all know that time afield is a joy, and a fine way to relax amid busy lives. The way things are going globally, I am inclined to spend even more time away from social media and the evening news!

My first taste of avocado happened on the windy, freezing Uyuni Salt Flat in Bolivia. I took a packed night bus from La Paz, every passenger cold and worn down by adventure.

It was a fenced-in high school ball field. The gate swung open and I went in, closing the gate behind me and the dog. From the pitcher's mound, I gave the fence lines a quick inspection without seeing any dog-size breaks or open gates, then I unsnapped the lead from Mac's collar.
