A person who was staying in a shed in North Harpswell suffered burns and smoke inhalation when the structure caught fire on Wednesday, June 24.
Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue responded to 23 Smokehouse Road, off Route 123, shortly after 7 p.m. and “found a shed fully involved in fire,” a spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal’s Office said in a statement.
“Crews quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby woods,” spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
Moss identified the occupant of the shed only as an “unhoused individual.” They were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
The property belongs to Mitchell and Alice Kane, according to town records. Reached by phone on Friday, June 26, Mitchell Kane said he expected the injured person to be released from the hospital Friday or Saturday.
Mitchell Kane said the person, whom he declined to identify, had been “using the shed as a camper.” The shed was destroyed, he said.
Moss, from the Fire Marshal’s Office, said investigators are working to pinpoint the fire’s cause. “Preliminary observations suggest the fire may have been electrical in nature; however, due to the extent of the damage, a final determination has not been made,” Moss said. “Investigators will continue their examination as additional information becomes available.”
