Harpswell man in critical condition after crash

A Harpswell resident is in critical condition after his vehicle crashed into a tree along Harpswell Neck Road Monday morning.

Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue responded to the 300 block of Harpswell Neck at 10:45 a.m. after learning a single motor vehicle had crashed into a tree, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Harpswell resident Jeffrey Berkowitz, 76, was driving a 2006 Aston Martin when he fell asleep and drifted off the road, striking a tree head-on.

“Mr. Berkowitz was transported to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening critical injuries,” said the release, issued Monday evening.
