The Harpswell Recycling Center will offer its annual drive-thru shredding service on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. Free to residents, the service will be provided by Shredding on Site, of Bangor, which will have a truck parked behind the center.

The Casco Bay Council of the Navy League of the United States will host the 2025 Maine Navy Ball on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the St. John's Community Center in Brunswick. The public is invited to join service members, veterans and retirees in celebrating a significant milestone, the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday.

Founded in July 2015, Harpswell Aging at Home provides free or low-cost initiatives to help older adults thrive in their homes. HAH was created — and is supported and led — by volunteers.

The town of Harpswell is reminding all dog owners, including nonresident taxpayers, visitors, dog sitters and fosterers, to ensure their furry friends are properly licensed, as required by state law. This applies to owners of dogs more than 6 months of age who are visiting for more than 10 days.

Two Harpswell residents, Kaylynn Laplante and Madigan Saunders, have been named to the dean's list at the University of New England for the spring semester.

Time is flying by, and aging comes with it. Nearly everyone asks the same questions and has similar needs as the birthdays accumulate. The good news is that there are wonderful places to seek out services and support in our own community. Some may even surprise you.

Dense stands of knotweed line any number of roads in Harpswell. It's easy to identify at this time of year, when clusters of small, white-green flowers bloom along its stems. Knotweed's height — at times up to 10 feet — and its hollow, segmented stalks cause many to mistake it for bamboo.

In July's Anchor, I offered some reasons why Harpswell should have a certified comprehensive plan. In this submission, I'd like to summarize the key goals and recommendations in the draft plan that will come before the town for approval in November.

The Meadow Tennis Club, of Orr's Island, is celebrating 100 years of offering tennis to the community.

The Maine Women's Giving Tree awarded $96,000 in grants to 16 area nonprofits at a May ceremony. Each awardee went through an extensive review process.
