My name is Jamie Hark and I am writing in support of the town’s initiative to maintain and provide access to the state’s Clark Cove property.
I’ll admit that I’m writing this selfishly, as I live along Allen Point Road and would greatly benefit from the plan. My wife and I are among the working young families in Harpswell who will never afford waterfront views or private beach access, who made it to Harpswell with a dream of raising a family in a beautiful community. You’ll find us walking with our toddler along Allen Point Road, waving to neighbors, even on the coldest days.
While the shore belongs to everyone, we rely on public access points to reach the water’s edge. This is true for many Mainers. Of the 3,500 miles of Maine coastline, approximately 88% is privately owned. We all benefit from more access to the water, and a trail to Clark Cove would provide a neighborhood beach and a much-needed amenity for the landlocked families of Harpswell.
I am also a local landscape designer and serve on Harpswell’s Conservation Commission. Trail systems, when designed and installed effectively, can have minimal impacts on natural resources and can serve as important tools to educate people about their environment and get folks outside. Our town has a legacy of creating great outdoor amenities, and I trust that it will do the same for Clark Cove.
A maintained trail with signage will provide safety for those accessing the beach; parking and a kiosk will deter speeding; public access will promote environmental stewardship and help maintain a valuable natural resource. Public land belongs to the public, and I urge my neighbors to support a new recreational amenity for our neighborhood and the people of Harpswell. The next generation will thank us!
