Harpswell Aging at Home

Memories are an important part of our lives. They're an accumulation of the people, experiences and things that have mattered to us. Often, family members know little about the early lives of older loved ones.

Do you have a beloved clock that won't keep time? A chair that wobbles? How about a rip in your favorite pair of pants? Rather than throw your item away, bring it to Repair Cafe Harpswell — a new program sponsored by Harpswell Aging at Home where a group of skilled volunteers will help you repair your treasured items.

"Activity friends" are the people with whom we share our passions for different activities, such as exercising, crafting and learning. They are one of the seven types of friends that experts say contribute to our well-being.

Do you remember taking long trips by car as a child? Maybe you were coming to Maine, maybe even to Harpswell.

As an early member of Harpswell Aging at Home, Beverly Prosser Gelwick helped bring the Neighbors Connecting program to life. She became a caller for the program, which seeks to keep Harpswell's older residents socially connected.

Nothing says summer more than fresh vegetables with crumbs of the garden still clinging to their roots. However, not everyone has equal access to fresh, local, organic produce.

The heart and soul of the Harpswell Aging at Home organization is its volunteers. Drawing on their own interests and skills, volunteers bring life to HAH's mission of "helping people thrive while aging at home."

As the home Jim and Juliana Gaudet built 50 years ago continued to age, its upkeep was becoming a challenge. Their sons helped with many repairs.

Each month, Harpswell Aging at Home's Meals in a Pinch program delivers approximately 400 meals to residents of Harpswell, many of them made in volunteers' homes.
