Young boatbuilders to finish rowboat, build lobster crates

An 11-foot Norwegian pram built by the Harpswell Boatbuilders program in 2023 and bought by a Harpswell resident. The educational program, which teaches kids the craft of boatbuilding, will begin a new session in January.

Harpswell Boatbuilders will offer a class for youth ages 9-14 from January through May.

The educational program has built five boats in years past. Profit from the sale of each boat goes to the Holbrook Community Foundation, of Cundy’s Harbor. For more information, go to holbrookcommunityfoundation.org.

The 2025 program will include two or three projects. First, students will complete a beautiful 11-foot rowboat that was donated to the Holbrook Community Foundation and carve a pair of wooden oars to go with it.

The class also will build 30 wooden lobster crates to replace those used for the crate races during Cundy’s Harbor Days each August.

Finally, if time allows, students will begin building a new wooden boat.

Classes will be held on Sundays beginning Jan. 19 and continuing through May. Students may attend during one of two time slots: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1-3 p.m. Each class meets at Flannery’s workshop in Cundy’s Harbor.

The cost is $125 per student. Tuition assistance is available for any student who needs it.For more information, contact Ann Flannery at annieflann@gmail.com  or 207-751-9589.
