Let the public decide

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I am following up on two recent letters, from Elizabeth Taylor (“Larger boards enhance representation,” September) and Steve Musica (“Five-member board almost a no-brainer,” October) suggesting that the Select Board be increased from three to five members in order to broaden representation and improve functionality. Just increasing the minimum number of votes required for passage from two to three indicates wider approval has been obtained.

I agree that the time has come for Harpswell to consider expanding the Select Board. More and more often, we are facing critical and complex townwide issues that need to be addressed, including availability of clean water, affordable housing and public open space.

I ask that the current board place such a proposal on the town warrant for 2027. In the meantime, we can conduct public meetings and engage the Anchor in discussing the pros and cons of such a move, and then let the public decide.
