Harpswell voters continued the town’s recent trend, backing Democratic candidates by lopsided margins across the ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
State Rep. Cheryl Golek, a second-term Democrat who lives on Harpswell Neck, received 2,229 votes to 1,313 for political newcomer Braeden Webber, a Republican who lives on Great Island. Golek’s House District 99 also includes part of Brunswick. With results from the neighboring town, Golek swept to victory with 64.1% of the vote.
State Sen. Matthea “Mattie” Daughtry, D-Brunswick, gained Harpswell’s support on her way to a fourth consecutive term as senator. Daughtry, who currently serves as president of the Senate, received 2,139 votes to 1,375 for challenger Bernard “Ben” Porter, a Republican who lives on Orr’s Island.
Daughtry won the race by 47 percentage points. In addition to Harpswell, Senate District 23 also includes the towns of Brunswick, Chebeague Island, Freeport, Pownal, and part of Yarmouth.
In statewide races, Harpswell also gave an edge to Democrats. Local voters backed Troy Jackson for U.S. Senate with 2,059 votes to 1,478 for the Republican incumbent, Susan Collins. The five-term senator conceded the race to Jackson early Wednesday.
Harpswell contributed to Democrat Hannah Pingree’s comfortable win in the race for the Blaine House. The Bangor Daily News and Decision Desk HQ called the race at 10:30 p.m.
Hannah Pingree, a former House speaker and director of the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, picked up 2,132 votes in Harpswell to 1,144 for Republican Bobby Charles and 274 for independent Rick Bennett. Hannah Pingree will replace Gov. Janet Mills, a fellow Democrat who could not run for reelection after two straight four-year terms in office.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, Hannah Pingree’s mother, racked up the most Harpswell votes of any candidate in a contested race as she cruised to a 10th consecutive two-year term as representative of Maine’s 1st Congressional District. Harpswell cast 2,260 votes for Chellie Pingree to 1,266 for her Republican challenger, Ronald Russell.
District Attorney Jackie Sartoris, a Brunswick Democrat, garnered 2,041 votes in Harpswell to 1,152 for independent Stephanie Anderson. In the race for county commissioner, Freeport Democrat Amy Leshure bested Cumberland independent Robert Vail by more than 1,000 votes, 2,098 to 1,052. The winner of the race will replace District 3 Commissioner Stephen Gorden, a Yarmouth Democrat.
In county races with just one candidate, Harpswell voters cast 2,772 votes for Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce and 2,697 for Judge of Probate Paul Aranson.
A total of 3,589 ballots were cast in Harpswell, according to unofficial results from the town clerk’s office.
