As plans come together for Harpswell’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday, several events are approaching for those who like music, architecture, gardens, food and Harpswell stories.

On Thursday, July 16, at 6 p.m., all are invited to a concert of patriotic songs performed by the Harpswell Concert Band at the Harpswell Bandstand by the Sea at Mitchell Field.

Coming on Saturday, July 18, at 2 p.m. is the commemoration of the first reading of the Declaration of Independence at the meetinghouse in Harpswell Center. Historian James Nelson will recreate the original reading from exactly 250 years ago.

On the same day, the Coastal Maine Living History Association will reenact life in Harpswell during the 1770s. Visitors will see what people wore, what kids did for fun, what food they ate and much more.

With free admission for all, the day will also include garden tours, kids’ games and new exhibits at the Harpswell Historical Society. There will be delicious food for sale, including lobster rolls from Pammy’s, baked goods and all-American hot dogs.

For Saturday, Aug. 1, Melinda Harris Richter has planned a tour of churches in Harpswell, including two in Cundy’s Harbor, two on Orr’s Island, two on Harpswell Neck and one on Bailey Island. At 4 p.m., all participants are invited to Elijah Kellogg Church for a community sing with the joint choirs of the Kellogg Church and the Islands Community Church.

All events are being coordinated by the 250th Committee of the Harpswell Historical Society, with representatives of 14 community organizations participating.

Later in August there will be boat tours of historic sites on the schooner Alert, with guides Gerry and Ron York, plus more activities.
