Town’s insurance will cover repairs at Recycling Center

The town of Harpswell’s property insurance provider recently approved a claim for repairs to damage caused when a backhoe outside the A. Dennis Moore Recycling Center and Transfer Station slipped on ice and struck the building.

Town Administrator Kristi Eiane told the Harpswell Select Board about the approval at its meeting on April 2. The town spent $8,100 on the work. There is a $1,000 deductible, she said, so it will receive $7,100.

The March 4 equipment accident temporarily disrupted operations at the facility, which remained open to accept trash and compost but could not accept recycling or returnables. However, repairs were completed quickly, and the facility returned to full operations within two days.

The facility’s manager, Chuck Perow, has said the electrical system powering the facility’s compactors was damaged while he was clearing ice buildup outside with a backhoe. The machine slid on the ice and struck the building with its front bucket, damaging a conduit and causing the compactors’ electrical system to shut down.
