Time for a central station

I have been an active member of Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue since 1979. That’s 46 years. To say that I’ve seen changes would be an understatement. I also serve on my department’s Board of Directors and on the town’s Fire and Rescue Planning Committee, and I’m retired from a career fire department. I am writing to encourage support for the central fire station on Mountain Road.

This concept has been discussed for decades in one form or another. The current proposal is the culmination of careful planning by local officials who are well versed in the problems that we face and our options for dealing with those problems.

This has not been undertaken lightly. The planners are all taxpayers too. But the time has come to proceed with this project. To wait longer will result in higher costs. We saw evidence of this recently when opponents of replacing the Frank J. Wood Bridge in Brunswick stalled the project for years with inane arguments and succeeded only in quadrupling the cost. Don’t let that happen here.

Please support your local emergency services. Take the time to vote in favor of this important and well-conceived project.

Nelson Barter, Harpswell Neck

Response to ‘Silver Linings’
