Fond memories of South Harpswell

Thanks for mailing the Anchor to my home in Illinois. My husband and I so enjoy reading all the latest news!

I have been coming to South Harpswell all my life, beginning as a child when we would travel from our home in New Jersey for my dad’s two-week vacations. I have so many fond memories: taking Junior Lifesaving off the town dock, Labor Day picnics where all of us kids would spend the day collecting driftwood for the bonfire, walking down to Estes Lobster House for supper or an ice cream — we even used to have square dances in that building! And looking for sea glass and crabs, boat rides to some of the islands for the day, Bailey’s Store, spectacular sunsets and so much more.

A lot has changed but we still come to the cottage once or twice a year to enjoy the beauty and solitude of South Harpswell, which never change. We love our daily walks to the point.

With appreciation for the connection the Anchor brings us,

Carol (Van Dongen) Hoeksema

A day to celebrate

Need for action is urgent

Protecting our community from fire and other safety emergencies is an essential municipal responsibility. As a volunteer with the Cundy's Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, I can personally attest to the growing challenges we face. Our department is critically understaffed with volunteer firefighters and there are no new Harpswell recruits enrolled in this year's fire academy. I anticipate that the town will increasingly need to rely on municipal firefighters as the number of volunteers continues to decline.

More of a single community

This is a little late, but I must say that not a time goes by when I see a charcoal-gray Ford F-150 that I do not think of Bob Anderson. We were subscribers from the earliest days.

Absent-minded birder grateful for help

From Ned Toll: While my family knows this all too well, I am hesitant to make it generally known that I am absent-minded. However, after I left my spotting scope at Wharton Point in Brunswick on Nov. 18, I need to thank a number of people in the Harpswell and birding communities who acted quickly to make sure it was returned to me.
