Outreach efforts aim to foster resilience, recovery after storms

Do you feel stressed when thinking about the big storms of last winter? Would you like to learn about local resources that can foster resilience before the next storm? A new program in Harpswell is here to help.

StrengthenME Storm Response offers support for older residents and fishing families who continue to experience stress from the effects of last January’s storms, and those who would like to prepare themselves and their neighbors for the next natural disaster.

Harpswell residents and registered nurses Gayle Hays and Martha Israel, of Harspwell Aging at Home, are outreach workers who are available to talk with older residents about their storm-related concerns and connect them to resources as needed. Talking and learning from fellow community members about strategies can help reduce anxiety and build mental resiliency, especially if you have problems related to heat, food, drinking water, phone service or transportation that still worry you.

There also is help for Harpswell’s fishing families. Abby Westberry, with the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association, is the resource for fishing families and can help with concerns around fishermen’s mental and physical health, working waterfront recovery, and business support.

Our team can help connect anyone with useful local resources, including mental health services, to prepare for another big storm and decrease your anxiety. We can’t control the weather, but we can decrease unnecessary psychological stress by knowing about local resources available to help.

This program is free and anonymous. If you or someone you know would be interested in talking to our outreach workers, please contact us at 207-833-5771 ext. 108.
