Please support Chuhuiv, Ukraine

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Harpswell has raised more than $100,000 to help the people of Ukraine. Urgently needed items such as used vehicles and hospital maternity equipment were delivered to our friends in Chuhuiv in 2023 and 2024.

We had expected a truce or an end to the war in 2025. Neither happened. So, once again, we will assist Chuhuiv, with your help. Among the city’s critical needs are wheelchairs and other mobility equipment.

Vladimir Putin has ratcheted up his brutal assault on Ukraine. The residents of Chuhuiv are paying for it. They live with the relentless wail of air raid sirens, the piercing scream of incoming missiles and drones, and the unabated terror of years of war. The city is plunged into darkness for hours daily. The temperature dropped to -13 Fahrenheit this winter.

Instead of organizing a fundraising event, as we have in the past, we’re asking for donations for Chuhuiv through TAPS, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has helped us deliver gifts in the past. Donations are tax-deductible.

Please donate as much as you can. Chuhuiv needs us. We can’t let them down.

To donate by credit card or check, please go to tapsnews.org/harpswell. For more information, contact Connie Sage Conner at seasage@icloud.com or 207-833-3385.

To provide this coverage 12 hours a day, five days a week, Harpswell employs a fire administrator, two full-time firefighters, one part-time firefighter, and several per diem firefighters who respond to calls from either Orr's Island or Harpswell Neck.

The legacy of HCA

I had the pleasure of being interviewed recently for a living history project at Harpswell Coastal Academy. I found the questions very thought-provoking and, at times, I struggled to find words and keep emotions in check.
