Harpswell Aging at Home

There's a new women's movement in Harpswell that is raising a new kind of consciousness. If the 1970s movement was about breaking boundaries, Harpswell's 2020s version is about binding the community together. GALA — Girls, Active, Laughing, Altogether — is Harpswell Aging at Home's newest program. It's gathering a growing number of enthusiastic followers to events that stimulate the mind, build camaraderie and make neighborly connections.

All the best organizations regularly examine their strategies and refine or even overhaul them as needed to support their mission and vision. Harpswell Aging at Home is no exception.

As the temperature drops below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the risk of hypothermia and other cold-related health issues goes up. Experts recommend staying hydrated and well nourished during winter months, which means drinking plenty of fluids and eating balanced meals to maintain energy levels and body heat.

As Harpswell Aging at Home steps into its second decade of service, new needs are emerging in the community. HAH is expanding its offerings again to provide bereavement support and support for dementia caregivers.

When people and organizations partner up, magic happens. Harpswell Aging at Home has proved this consistently.

Founded in July 2015, Harpswell Aging at Home provides free or low-cost initiatives to help older adults thrive in their homes. HAH was created — and is supported and led — by volunteers.

Time is flying by, and aging comes with it. Nearly everyone asks the same questions and has similar needs as the birthdays accumulate. The good news is that there are wonderful places to seek out services and support in our own community. Some may even surprise you.

Dan and Ellen Hoebeke retired to Orr's Island eight years ago. Interested in becoming involved with their community, they began volunteering with Harpswell Aging at Home.

We all need a hand at times, no matter who we are or how well we've managed our lives. A ride into town. A meal in a pinch. A break from caregiving. TLC for a cranky laptop or damaged lamp. Someone to talk with when life feels like it's just too much.
