The contractor for the new town dock at Potts Point expects to complete the project on Tuesday, June 23.

Scott Dyer is the general manager of Custom Float Services Inc., which started building the dock in April. In an email on Tuesday, June 16, Dyer said parts of the float system needed to be anchored and adjusted before it would be finished.

“We are definitely near the final portion of the project,” Dyer said. He said the crew was looking forward to “getting the new pier up and running” soon.

On June 15, Harbormaster Darcie Couture contacted residents who have permits to tie up dinghies at the dock. She said 2026 permits would be available for pickup on Thursday, June 18.

Michael Dana, a neighbor to the dock and outspoken advocate for its replacement, has followed the construction from the beginning and provided updates to others interested in the project.

Dana said construction has been dependent on tide and weather, with a crew of just three or four working on the structure.

“They did a fantastic job, with wonderful craftsmanship,” Dana said in an email. He believes that, between the dock’s larger size and its pressure-treated materials, it “should last for many, many years to come.”

Back-to-back storms in January 2024 destroyed the previous dock. In a nearly unanimous vote in March 2025, Harpswell voters agreed to rebuild it.

The replacement is designed to be sturdier than its predecessor and more likely to withstand future storms. It is 2 feet taller and 2 feet wider than the original.

The town is paying Custom Float Services $199,400 to build the dock. Almost half of the price tag will come from an insurance payout for the old dock. Town officials have said they expect disaster funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cover the rest.
