A 40-foot Tartan sailboat was towed to Safe Harbor Great Island marina on Friday afternoon after its crew abandoned the vessel off Pond Island the previous day, according to Harpswell Harbormaster Darcie Couture.

The boat, which sailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, lost its rudder at about 4 p.m. Thursday, Couture said. Its crew used a dinghy to reach land safely.

The sailboat was awash on the outer side of Pond Island until a crew from Determination Marine/Towboat US stabilized it and towed it off a ledge Friday. The vessel arrived at Safe Harbor at about 4 p.m. to be hauled out for repairs.

No injuries were reported.
