Stay in your lane

Harpswell drivers: Please, please, please follow the rules of the road, especially on our narrow main roads! If someone or something is close to your side of the road, whether pedestrian, bicyclist or vehicle, you need to slow down or stop —  not swerve into the oncoming lane without clearance to do so.

Recently, in broad daylight and on dry roads, I barely avoided a head-on collision because the person heading south on 123 wanted to give a wide berth to a person (off the road) who was walking to their mailbox. Rather than slowing down, the driver swerved right into my northbound lane without seeing my car.

I’ve witnessed dozens of these situations because too many drivers either don’t know or don’t care that drivers need to accommodate obstacles that are on their side of the road!
