Yes vote protects Clark Cove

Vote yes to protect Clark Cove.

The parcel being discussed is state-owned land on Allen Point Road that is open for public use now! Why is it assumed use will drastically increase, followed by abuse and damage to surrounding properties, if the town manages the property?

The offer from the state provides the town an opportunity to lightly manage the wildlife habitat and mark out boundaries, lessening disturbance to the neighborhood. Control by volunteers on our Town Lands Committee could better manage the wildlife being discussed.

The addition of low-intensity amenities would make it friendly for those with young children and/or older adults to use. Having a small, marked path will give those who wish to visit a direction to the shore rather than having to bushwhack down to Clark Cove, possibly trampling the sensitive areas of concern.

The small, marked parking area proposed would get cars off the road and provide a safe area to start a walk to a discreetly marked trail. Signage and a designated parking area would help keep visitors from driving down Morse Shore Road to the water, looking for a way to the shore, then turning around and driving out.

Most folks hiking in town are sensitive to the surrounding properties, but they need to know the rules. It’s easy to get disoriented in a strange area. A small sign, like those used on other town trails, would give them direction.

Voting to approve is in accordance with the recently approved comprehensive plan. Nothing proposed conflicts with “rural character” or “preserving scenic views,” language related to future development of housing.

As I listen to the reasons for not voting to approve, they are about things that “could happen” with just a small sign and a small parking area for a few cars. Really?

Kudos to Karin Soderberg for her January letter to the editor relating her experience getting "caught in a computer scam."
