November safety tips from Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue

Welcome to November — “real” fall. As we slip into the cold time, we’d like to offer some things to keep in mind.

The time of slips and falls will begin. Keep your snow shovels on the porch and sand or salt handy. We’ll be seeing ice and snow this month.

If you haven’t already done so and you heat with oil, have your furnace cleaned and inspected. If you burn wood as a primary or secondary heat source and have not had your chimney cleaned, do so now before the real cold sets in.

It’s time to put that ice scraper and snow brush back in the car, along with some warm clothes in case of an emergency.

Finally, November is the start of firearms season for deer in Maine. Although youth hunting began in October, resident hunting begins on Nov. 2 and continues through the month. Muzzleloader season continues another two weeks beyond that.

When walking on trails or in the woods, be sure to wear at least one article of “hunter orange” clothing — more is better. Best to avoid brown, white or tan for obvious reasons.

Have a fun and safe month and enjoy that turkey!
