Wilcox Wellness & Fitness is gearing up for its ninth annual Burpees for Turkeys event, with donations benefiting United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s network of community partners working to increase food security throughout the region.

Burpees for Turkeys will take place at both Wilcox Wellness & Fitness locations, in Brunswick and Bangor, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 2. The Brunswick location is at 275 Bath Road, Suite 3.

The event seeks to raise awareness and donations to fight food insecurity and childhood hunger.

“One in six children in Maine live with food insecurity, meaning they lack access to nutritious foods to live a healthy lifestyle,” said Paige Wilcox, owner of Wilcox Wellness & Fitness in Bangor. In its first eight years, the event has raised more than $75,000 to fight food insecurity in Maine.

“Food insecurity may be invisible to many in our community, yet up to 55% of seniors are food insecure while 45% of us right here in Brunswick live paycheck to paycheck,” said Allison Hopkins, Cundy’s Harbor resident and owner of Wilcox Wellness & Fitness in Brunswick. “By creating awareness, we create the power to create change and create impact through our actions.”

The public is welcome to attend and cheer on the participants as they complete burpees. For every $5 raised, one burpee will be completed to support food security efforts in the Midcoast. Donations may be made online at bit.ly/burpees23.

“We are honored to represent the incredible network of partners and volunteers working to help increase food security throughout the Midcoast,” said Nicole Evans, executive director of United Way of Mid Coast Maine. “Wilcox Wellness & Fitness is committed to the health and wellness of our community.”
