The Harpswell Neck Physical Education Association will get upgrades to its camp and recreational facilities this fall with help from a $4,874 grant from the Brunswick Rotary Club.
The grant will cover the cost to lift HNPEA’s current building and put in a new foundation, replace doors and windows, move a jungle gym and add proper mulch, and replace a swing set. The nonprofit’s building and equipment are at Fulle Field in Harpswell Center, next to Elijah Kellogg Church.
The improvements should allow HNPEA to resume its summer day camp in 2027. The camp was a popular option for local youth during the summer until the organization put it on hold for 2026, citing the need for repairs and the departure of a longtime program director.
The Rotary Club presented the grant to David Chipman, president of HNPEA’s board, during a club meeting on Aug. 24. The club’s president, Carolyn Bulliner, submitted a Rotary district grant to secure the funds.
“We are grateful for the Rotary’s participation in this project, not only for the necessary funding but for the volunteer labor to see the project through to the end,” Chipman said.
Chipman said HNPEA received another grant for the work from the Gwendolyn Elwell Flanagan Foundation.
HNPEA’s playground and its new tennis and pickleball courts are open to the public and free to use. For more information, or to donate or volunteer, go to hnpea.me.
