The Harpswell History Hunt, part of the town’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday, has come to an end, with dozens of hunters sleuthing out a hidden phrase.
From July 4 through Aug. 31, participants used a special map to locate and explore 16 historic sites offering a glimpse into the people, places and stories that
helped shape Harpswell into the community it is today.
Each site had a placard with historical facts and a secret code letter. Once participants collected all 16 code letters, they unscrambled them to reveal a three-word phrase. Each participant that submitted an entry form received a unique Harpswell History Hunter pin.
A total of 10 teams and 55 individuals, including children, correctly identified the phrase: “Discover your past!”
Most hunters were from Harpswell or elsewhere in Maine, but there were entries from people who live in other parts of New England and as far
away as Florida, Texas and California.
Jeanie Rubio, of Harpswell, won the grand prize of a trip for four with Harpswell Select Board member Matt Gilley aboard his lobster boat, the Catherine G. The winner may elect to give lobstering a try or simply enjoy a sunset cruise this fall.
The winners of a selection of books about Harpswell history and a collection of T-shirts, hats and stickers were Denise Barclay, of Harpswell, and Matthew Cain, of Enfield, Connecticut.
Thank you to everyone who joined in the adventure and helped celebrate Harpswell’s history as part of America’s 250th birthday!
