A new stone monument outside the Orr’s and Bailey Islands Fire Department station on Orr’s Island is dedicated to all those who have contributed to the community’s fire and rescue efforts.

The monument was unveiled during a ceremony on Nov. 10. It features a bronze dedication plaque set into a large, rough-cut piece of New England granite. The plaque reads: “Dedicated to all who have given of themselves with generosity and selflessness to support fire and rescue services in our community. Thank you for your service.”

Kathy Hirst, treasurer of the fire department’s board of directors, said local arborist Tim Vail came up with the idea for the monument. He approached the board in winter 2024 with a proposal to honor those who support local fire and rescue services.

A committee was formed to design the monument and upgrade the grounds at the main station, at 1600 Harpswell Islands Road, Hirst said. With Vail’s help and connections, the group made improvements that will support future community events.

The board approved a budget for the project, she said, but many services and materials were donated. Contributions came from R.A. Webber & Sons Inc.; Jerold’s Landscaping; the Coombs family, of Bailey Island; and McPherson Property Management.

During the unveiling ceremony, OBIFD Assistant Chief Sean Hall expressed his gratitude to all who have volunteered or donated to support the area’s fire and rescue services.

“We exist because of you guys,” Hall said. “We stand on the shoulders of giants.”
