The town of Harpswell is reminding all dog owners, including nonresident taxpayers, visitors, dog sitters and fosterers, to ensure their furry friends are properly licensed, as required by state law. This applies to owners of dogs more than 6 months of age who are visiting for more than 10 days.
According to state law, all dogs must be licensed in the town where they are kept by their owner or keeper. This requirement applies to any dog that has been in the state for more than 10 days in a one-year period. The town of Harpswell strongly recommends this practice, as it serves a vital purpose: getting lost dogs back home quickly and safely, which reduces stress and heartache for both dogs and their owners. The registration process is simple and can bring peace of mind.
“A license tag is the fastest way for us to identify a lost dog and its owner,” said Animal Control Officer James F. Bebarski. “It’s a simple act of responsible pet ownership that can make a huge difference in an emergency.”
Bebarski stressed that this responsibility extends to anyone caring for a dog. He advises both professional and nonprofessional dog sitters and fosterers to make sure the dogs they are caring for have proof of a current rabies vaccination and a valid license. This simple check ensures compliance with state law and helps protect the health and safety of the dog, the sitter and the community.
Bebarski added that even dogs who primarily stay indoors are required to be licensed. A surprising number of lost pets escaped from homes through open doors, windows and gates because of a startled reaction or a moment of curiosity. A collar with a license and a current phone number is the best form of insurance for these unexpected events.
Dogs found at large without a valid Maine license, even with an out-of-state tag, are typically taken to a local shelter, where fees and fines may be attached to the dog’s release. Having the proper Harpswell license makes the process of reuniting a dog with its owner much quicker and more efficient.
The town recommends that all dogs in Harpswell always wear a collar with their license and a current phone number, whether they are inside or outside. This small action can make a monumental difference in a lost dog’s journey.
Dog licenses can be obtained through the Harpswell Town Office. Owners will need to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. The fees for licensing are minimal, and the peace of mind it provides is priceless.
