I am writing to encourage my fellow Harpswell citizens to vote no on June 10 regarding the proposal to demolish the administration building at Mitchell Field.
Experienced construction professionals have conservatively stated that there would be no taxpayer funds used for the renovations required to add “real” restrooms and a recreation area to the existing building. Abatement costs for removal of any toxic substances in the building would need to be spent whether the building is demolished or repurposed. A fundraising plan to cover the costs involved in the repurposing is already in process.
Uses for the repurposed building could include “real” bathrooms for use by people using the beach, boat launch and walking areas, or going to bandstand concerts; a covered area to allow people to get out of the rain or sun, or just sit and talk; showers for beach and boat launch users; a children’s play area; and other uses not yet planned.
