Local Scouts enjoy winter camping, visit maple shack

Brunswick Scouting Troop 648 has been active.

February offered great conditions for winter camping. A dozen Scouts braved subfreezing temperatures while camping on the banks of Panther Pond in Raymond. Their scoutmaster led activities focused on how to be effective leaders and communicators.

A friendly competition ensued as patrols held an outdoor cook-off, displaying skills and know-how to prepare variations of s’mores using nothing more than a two-burner stove and camping utensils.

On March 17, Troop 648 spent an evening with the residents at Dionne Commons in Brunswick. In addition to outdoor adventures, Scouts are committed to community service.

On March 31, the troop visited a maple shack. Scouts learned how to identify trees common to the area, including species that provide sap. They witnessed the process of tapping a tree and harvesting the sap. Scouts learned about the components and operation of the boiler and how to test the sugar content of the syrup. Their favorite part was tasting fresh syrup over vanilla ice cream.

On April 10, the troop hosted a crossover ceremony welcoming 10 individuals as they progressed on their Scouting journey, moving from the pack to the troop. A second installment of new tents and gear has been ordered as the troop is expanding.

In June, 10 Scouts ranking first class and above will traverse the Allagash Wilderness Waterway on a six-day excursion involving 80 miles of paddling and portage.

The Scouts are looking forward to September, when they will summit Mount Washington during a weekend of hiking and camping.
