Plots available at Community Garden

The Harpswell Community Garden at George J. Mitchell Field has gardening plots available for rent for the 2025 season.

The organic garden offers an opportunity for local gardeners who want to join a community of gardeners or don’t have a great space at home for gardening.

There are water spigots throughout the garden, which boasts a solar-powered well, a storage shed with communal tools, and on-site composting. Individuals and groups are welcome to rent plots to grow their own produce and flowers.

Plots are also available for growing produce for fundraising or donation to community programs. Rental fees are waived for those growing food for donation, and for others based on need.

Volunteers are always welcome at the garden, especially to help grow and harvest produce for donation to Harpswell’s Sharing Tables and the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program.

For more information or to sign up for a plot, go to harpswell.maine.gov/community-garden.

A burning issue

Burning bush is an iconic shrub in the New England area. When driving through Harpswell in the fall, one sees innumerable examples of its stunning beauty. The bright red foliage of a burning bush complements many houses and their surrounding landscapes. The many visible benefits of burning bush obscure its negative ecological impact, which is so stark that it is no longer sold in Maine.
