An integral piece of our community

Everyone who drives down Route 123, or “the Neck,” passes by a familiar landmark — Two Coves Farm on Neils Point Road. Run by Joe and Laura Grady, the farm is home to herds of sheep, pigs, chickens, and recently added Belted Galloways, an uncommon species of beef cow.

Laura and Joe put in long hours tending to the physical aspects of running a farm, as well as keeping detailed records of breeding practices and quantity of product. This helps them run the farm efficiently and profitably.

Laura names many of the 50-60 lambs born each spring, especially if they need extra care or will become part of the breeding program. She has a big heart and uses her extensive knowledge of animal husbandry to nurture the whole herd.

Although he wouldn’t brag about it, Joe is one of the most knowledgeable people in Maine when it comes to herding dogs. The farm’s herding dogs are joined by a Great Pyrenees whose job it is to guard the chickens.

Two Coves Farm is an integral piece of our community, as are the Gradys. We are fortunate to have them feeding us.

Small farms are in trouble all across the country and, in fact, the world. Two Coves Farm is a vital, essential and sustaining part of our community, and I wholeheartedly support them.

Oppose Mitchell Field boat launch

I oppose this idea of a large boat launch, with all that goes with it, at Mitchell Field. The recent disclosure that this could cost the town and its taxpayers more than $1.9 million seals it for me — not that I thought this was a good idea in the first place.

As many launches as possible

My only opinion on public boat launches in Harpswell is to create as many as possible. It's entirely untrue that they only facilitate a little joyriding for a minimal number of goof-offs.
