Gear up for fall with Harpswell Aging at Home

Harpswell Aging at Home volunteers celebrate the organization’s many successes during a volunteer appreciation event in November 2023. You, too, can be part of Harpswell Aging at Home.

September is upon us, bringing perfect tomatoes, cooler nights for sleeping, and perhaps a more welcome, regular schedule of activities. As your calendar empties of family reunions and summer visitors, consider whether you have time to make a positive difference in someone’s life by volunteering with Harpswell Aging at Home.

Volunteers are the key to HAH’s success and sustainability. Whether you have an hour or two per month or an hour or more per week, HAH offers a wide variety of opportunities to share your skills and talents while meeting others and making new friends throughout our town. You may already be familiar with some of these opportunities:

Driving: Provide free rides to appointments, run errands, or socialize.

Cooking: Provide meals and socialization through Lunch with Friends, Meals in a Pinch, and Cooking at 43° North.

Construction and maintenance: Participate in home repairs and upgrades that keep members of our community safer, warmer and drier.

However, HAH also needs volunteer assistance in other areas, including:

Making and maintaining social connections: Place weekly phone calls to neighbors, provide support and socialization, or write notes.

Social work and/or nursing: Conduct home assessments and connect older neighbors with resources.

Creative expression: Direct or take part in TV programs about health and wellness; contribute photography or videography, graphic design, etc.; or communicate about and promote awareness of HAH and its activities through writing and/or using social media.

Small repairs: Help at our Repair Cafes, fixing items such as clocks and lamps.

Project management: Coordinate and plan one of our programs or activities.

Sustainability and recycling: Provide know-how in making our activities more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Computer/Technical Support: Assist our neighbors with phone, tablet or computer troubleshooting.

Finally: If you belong to a club or group of any size, we’re always looking for organizations to host one of our Lunch with Friends events. Want to meet some great folks and have fun while giving back to your community? Then please join HAH to help our neighbors not only age in place, but thrive in place.
