From a kitchen tucked away in the heart of Harpswell, I’m excited to share my recipes with you! I recently changed my major from civil engineering to culinary arts in pursuit of my dream to work in the culinary industry, and possibly open my own bakery someday.

I have since started my new coursework and worked as a private chef right here in Harpswell. I also write a food blog and post my creations to social media. I am beyond thrilled to make this switch as I am passionate about the food I make and, most especially, the joy I see on the faces of the people who try my food.

Growing up in a multicultural home with both Chinese and Italian influences gives me a diverse culinary background. Because of my heritage, you may notice a fusion of influences in the dishes and recipes I share.

I have always been fond of baking cakes and cookies. I even started a chocolate chip cookie business during the pandemic, making more than 15 renditions of the classic before I was satisfied. I have delved into gluten-free and vegan baking and have created delicacies in both. Currently, I am exploring my love of savory foods. I look forward to bringing my recipes into your home.

This recipe for poached pears holds a special place in my heart — perhaps because it is simply irresistible, or maybe because I crafted it within just 20 minutes and it’s become a personal favorite. It’s a timeless delight that uses a whole bottle of white wine, simmered to a rich, flavorful syrup. You can easily grab a bottle of this essential ingredient at our cherished local spot, Black Sheep Wine and Beer Shop, conveniently nestled just off Mountain Road. They have an incredible selection waiting for you.

Poached pears are my ultimate dessert choice, effortlessly elegant yet simple to create. I adore pairing these fragrant pears with velvety vanilla ice cream, a combination that beautifully harmonizes the textures, the wine’s depth, and the aromatic hints of anise seed and cinnamon. Whether served warm or chilled, it’s a culinary treat that never fails to impress.

White wine vanilla poached pears

Serves: 5

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 45 minutes

Total time: 50 minutes

Ingredients:

5 pears, peeled

1 bottle white wine

1/2 cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder

2 star anise seeds

Directions:

Wash and peel the pears and place them in a large pot. Add the remaining ingredients into the pot and place it on the stove on medium-high heat. Once it boils, turn down the heat to medium-low and simmer for 45 minutes. Every few minutes, rotate the pears so every part is being cooked and covered.

The liquid should now be a thick syrup, and the pears should be tender, easily pierced with a fork. Remove from stove and enjoy chilled or warm! Serve by itself, or on top of vanilla ice cream. Make sure you serve the pears topped with the thick wine syrup. It is my favorite part, as it is extremely flavorful!
