‘Outstanding’ animal control officer to resign

Harpswell Animal Control Officer Gail Federico will resign May 15 after nearly seven years in the role.

“It has been a pleasure serving the residents of Harpswell and working with the staff at the town office,” Federico said in a resignation letter dated Feb. 7. She started in June 2015.

“She’s been an outstanding animal control officer,” Town Administrator Kristi Eiane told the Board of Selectmen on Feb. 10. “Her approach has been one of education and she really has made extraordinary efforts to reach out to people in town and to really get people to comply by educating them and informing them rather than fining them.”

Federico will work with the town to select and train a replacement, and will serve as a backup if necessary. The select board accepted her resignation with regret.
