Honor to provide TV services

Harpswell Community TV would like to thank the town of Harpswell, its government, people, local educators, nonprofits and businesses, for your continued support over the years.

Property tax freeze for seniors

The August tax mailing includes a notice of a new state law that exempts certain property owners from future tax increases. All residential property owners over 65 who have owned a qualifying homestead for 10 years can apply for this tax relief program annually. It went into effect Aug. 8 and those who wish to apply have until Dec. 1 to do so.

Maine, memories and delicious food

In the July issue, I was pleased to read about Kathy and Sheldon Morse and their new dining venture at Henry Allen's Seafood. I have been a customer of the Morses since the summer of '00, when I stumbled into their newly opened lobster shack on Morse's Wharf at the end of Morse Shore Road.

Eager to help neighbors

When Harpswell Aging at Home was created seven years ago, one of the biggest concerns expressed by survey respondents was the ability to get routine repair and maintenance done on their homes.

Removal of campaign signs

It's always exciting to see the flourish of campaign signs come out prior to an election. They are indicative of activism, involvement, and interest in our democracy and our community.

Observations on the field

Recently, while walking Mitchell Field with my dog, I took an informal bird count. On the lower field, I chalked up a bobolink sighting right off the bat. These seasonal migrant birds are endangered and need the open meadows for raising their young.

Corn fritters

I just finished reading your June issue. I was born in 1931. I grew up during World War II. I got a kick out of the column about pancakes on Page 23 ("Cooking at 43° North: Hold the butter and syrup").

A unique volunteer experience

Two miles off the coast of Harpswell, in beautiful Casco Bay, lies Eagle Island, the summer home of Adm. Robert E. Peary, America's foremost Arctic explorer. This unique property is a Maine State Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark.

Great job on Hiking Challenge

I'd like to thank the folks at the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust and Harpswell Recreation for the great job they did running this year's Harpswell Hiking Challenge. It was nice to see so many families out vying to complete the full eight-trail challenge or the modified four-trail challenge.
