A candle in the bay

I just returned from England and read about Chris McIntire’s death. He was one of my most delightful English students at Mt. Ararat in my advanced class in 2009. Here is a short poem he wrote in response to a prompt about candles:

Candle Redux

There is a ledge out in the bay

That sailors would hit night and day.

It is easy to run aground

Even if you are minding your way.

So they decided to build a light house

And hire a keeper to stay.

And so, now, it stands out in the bay —

A lovely little candle guiding the way.
