Struggling to make ends meet

“Together, we thrive.” This simple yet complicated statement is the theme of this year’s United Way of Mid Coast Maine fundraising campaign.

On behalf of the nonprofit organizations we support (listed at uwmcm.org), we are asking the community to help us meet our $1.3 million fundraising goal.

Why support United Way of Mid Coast Maine?

Today, almost 50% of our community is struggling to make ends meet. United Way plays an important role to bring people together — nonprofits, schools, municipalities, employers, volunteers and donors — to respond to emerging and unmet community needs that no single organization can address on its own.

We need the collective support of the community to help our family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers thrive, not just survive.

When you invest in United Way, you support 50 local programs helping 41,000 people each year:

  • Access safe shelter, food, affordable health care and high-quality child care.
  • Strengthen families, reduce homelessness, and prevent violence and abuse.
  • Ensure vulnerable youth, adults and seniors are supported and connected.

United Way has been your trusted community partner since 1956, and we continue to be a locally governed and independently run nonprofit organization led by a small staff and dozens of community volunteers representing Brunswick, Harpswell, Lincoln, Knox and Sagadahoc counties.

Thank you for helping us continue to meet our mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. To donate, go to uwmcm.org/donate; call 207-443-9752; or send mail to 34 Wing Farm Parkway, #201, Bath, ME 04530.

Good journalism packaged well

I wish to compliment the Harpswell Anchor team for its journalistic efforts to provide the community it serves with a high-quality newspaper. As a former reporter and editor with a newspaper company serving a large area of Chicago's suburbs with community news, I am saddened by the continuing reports of local newspaper closures throughout our country.
