Harpswell motorists who rely on U.S. Route 1 to travel toward Topsham or Bath and points beyond should plan for overnight detours this Sunday as the Maine Department of Transportation continues its highway rehabilitation project in Brunswick.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, the northbound and southbound ramps connecting Route 1 to the Main Street Bridge and the Topsham Bypass Bridge over the Androscoggin River will be closed one at a time between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Monday. Drivers will be directed to the next available exit via cones and signage.
The closures are part of a larger $15.5 million project that began July 6 and is expected to continue through Dec. 1. The work zone spans over 6 miles of Route 1, extending east and west of Cushing Street and Old Bath Road. The project includes pavement milling, resurfacing, safety upgrades and ramp improvements.
Harpswell drivers heading to I-295, Topsham Fair Mall, or destinations farther north may face delays or detours if traveling during the closure window. Likewise, those returning from Portland or southern Maine late Saturday night could encounter temporary ramp blockages.
Coastal Road Repair of Westbrook is the contractor on the project. MaineDOT has not indicated whether additional overnight closures are planned later in the construction season, but Harpswell travelers should expect intermittent disruptions through the fall.
