A Harpswell man and his passenger escaped injury when his SUV crashed into Cranberry Horn Cemetery, where it rolled onto its side and burst into flames, late Saturday, Feb. 19.

A firefighter douses the wreckage of a 2008 Kia Sportage in Cranberry Horn Cemetery.

Wayne Allen, 28, was driving a 2008 Kia Sportage on Cundy’s Harbor Road at 10:12 p.m. when he swerved to avoid an animal, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle left the road, then struck trees and several grave markers before rolling onto its side.

Allen and his passenger were able to exit the vehicle before it burst into flames. The Cundy’s Harbor Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Allen and his passenger were treated by emergency medical services, but were not taken to a hospital.

The crash and fire destroyed the vehicle and damaged the cemetery. The Sheriff’s Office believes excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
