Candidates lining up for House race

Voters in Harpswell and east Brunswick will elect a new member of the Maine House of Representatives this year. Three candidates — all Harpswell residents — have entered the race.

Rep. Jay McCreight, D-Harpswell, cannot run for reelection because of term limits. The Great Island resident is in the final year of her fourth two-year term.

In another change, Harpswell is now part of House District 99. McCreight represents House District 51, which consists of Harpswell, West Bath and northeast Brunswick.

The Legislature redrew the district last year as part of a periodic, constitutionally mandated process that ensures roughly equal populations in all 151 House districts. Harpswell is no longer in the same district as West Bath, but joins a larger slice of Brunswick in District 99.

Three candidates have registered with the state to run for the seat. The deadline for party candidates to enter the race is March 15, while independent candidates have until June 1.

Party candidates must secure their party’s nomination in the primary on June 14 to advance to the general election on Nov. 8.

District 99 Democrats will choose between Cheryl Golek, a co-founder of The Vicarage by the Sea who lives on Harpswell Neck; and Sheila Menair, a financial adviser who lives on Great Island.

District 99 Republicans have one candidate in the race: Stephen “Bubba” Davis, a retired Bath Iron Works engineer who lives in Cundy’s Harbor.
