The Harpswell Conservation Commission will hold a public workshop about water conservation, “Be Water Wiser: Preserving Harpswell’s Water Supply,” at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Harpswell Community School.
The commission is organizing a series of presentations to help us all understand where we get our water from, how it gets there in the first place, how we tap into it, and how to ensure we have enough to meet our household needs.
The first of these presentations took place on Sept. 11. Jessica Meeks, hydrogeologist with the Maine Geological Survey, explained where our water originates and why, even within Harpswell, supply varies. Her presentation can be viewed at harpswelltv.org.
At the conclusion of her presentation, she was asked who is responsible for protecting and conserving our water sources. Her answer? You … but also your neighbors. It takes a community effort.

Do you think you should install a rain barrel, but you’re not sure how to do it or whether you can afford it?
Join us to hear the facts about usage and how to simply and effectively conserve this most critical resource — our water. Learn about how you might participate in community research that will add to our understanding of the resources we have and how to protect them.
The Conservation Commission’s second presentation on water conservation will share ideas for how best to conserve water and thus become “water wise.” Enjoy refreshments and a chance to take home the door prize: a bait barrel with the parts and instructions necessary to assemble it yourself.
