Editor’s Corner: Talk to us

The Anchor wants to hear from you. This holds true all the time, but now, we’re adding another option for you to communicate with us.

We want you to write letters to the editor. We want you to pitch stories. We want you to submit events for our calendar. We want you to like our Facebook page and comment on our posts. We want your feedback — good, bad or otherwise.

Think one of our stories missed the mark? That we didn’t cover what you’re sure is the story of the week, the month, the year?

Well, you can complain about it to your family and friends, to co-workers or strangers, but we can’t address your concern or follow up on your tip unless you share it with us.

The best way to contact me is by email: joliver@harpswellanchor.org. If you prefer, you can reach me on my cellphone, by call or text, at 207-701-9953. If you call and I don’t answer, leave a voicemail and I’ll get back to you.

(If you need to contact the Anchor about something other than news, you can reach Jane Warren about advertising and sponsorships at jane@harpswellanchor.org or 802-922-5863, or Janice Thompson about development and operations at janice@harpswellanchor.org or 207-504-4428. If you’re not sure who you need to talk to, email info@harpswellanchor.org and Sam Allen will direct your email to the right place. You can reach all of us by mail at P.O. Box 448, Harpswell, ME 04079.)

Now to the new option. If you prefer a face-to-face conversation, I am now holding monthly office hours at various locations around town. My first stop was at the Orr’s Island Library on March 26. Next, I’ll be at the Cundy’s Harbor Library from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday, April 25. Each month, we’ll list the time and place in the Anchor calendar.

Please stop by and tell me what’s on your mind. I’ll be waiting to hear your story idea, field your complaint, or just chat about the Anchor, Harpswell, local news — you pick the subject. Any Celtics fans out there? Let’s swap finals predictions.

Whatever you want to talk about, come on in and talk to me.

Cooking at 43° North: Winter memories

It's the holiday season and maybe it's me, but I'm just not feeling it this year like I usually do. In my heart I know it's the lack of snowfall. When I was young, storms would dump copious amounts of snow in December. We would go downtown and see store windows decorated for the season. The streets were lined with lights and garland that ended at a large tree covered in snow that glittered with colorful lights. It was simply glorious.

Journalism has changed markedly in my 73 years. In the past you could read many newspapers and be reasonably comfortable that the editors presented the facts without a strong bias in their reporting. Most of us relied upon the newspaper, along with trusted news anchors, to learn what was going on around the world. Sadly, that seems like ancient history, except for this newspaper.
