A Harpswell woman fled police twice and caused a crash that injured another driver on Monday, Oct. 12, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies first stopped Karen A. Pennell, 48, shortly after noon in Brunswick, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Pennell, who was driving a 2005 Honda Accord, was wanted on a warrant.
“Karen initially stopped and spoke with deputies but once she was ordered out of the vehicle, she fled, almost running a deputy over,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Deputies attempted to catch up to the vehicle but were unable to locate it.”
The Sheriff’s Office and the Brunswick Police Department continued to look for Pennell. About an hour later, deputies found her in her car on Merritt Road, off Cundy’s Harbor Road.
“Deputies attempted to box her in but she was able to get around and flee again,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Pennell ran the stop sign where Merritt Road meets Cundy’s Harbor Road, and she crashed into a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Robert Phillips, 56, of Harpswell, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Phillips suffered minor injuries.
Pennell was arrested and charged with driving to endanger, failure to stop for law enforcement, and violating her bail conditions. She was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.
Pennell’s original warrant had been issued because she failed to report to jail to serve a sentence in an earlier case, according to the Sheriff’s Office. She had been granted a stay, or delay, before beginning the sentence, but didn’t show up at the agreed-upon time.
