Harpswell voters will choose officials at the county, state and federal levels in the upcoming general election, but there will be no municipal candidates or local referendum questions on the ballot.

Town Clerk Cathy Doughty confirmed the town will not have a separate local ballot this November. There are no statewide referendum questions, either. The town’s sample ballot lists nine races, including contests for governor, U.S. senator, U.S. representative and Cumberland County district attorney.

Voting will take place at Harpswell Community School from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Three candidates are running to succeed Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who is completing her second consecutive term.

Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree, of North Haven, is a former Maine House speaker who headed Mills’ Office of Policy Innovation and the Future.

Republican Robert “Bobby” Charles, of Leeds, is an attorney and former U.S. assistant secretary of state. Independent Rick Bennett, of Oxford, is a sitting state senator and former Senate president.

Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, of Bangor, is seeking a sixth term against Democrat Troy Jackson, of Allagash, a former president of the Maine Senate.

In Maine’s 1st Congressional District, Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, of North Haven, faces Republican Ronald Russell, of Kennebunkport, in her bid for a 10th term.

Harpswell residents also will vote in two races for the Maine Legislature.

In House District 99, two-term incumbent Democratic state Rep. Cheryl Golek faces Republican Braeden Webber. Both candidates live in Harpswell. The district also includes part of Brunswick.

In Senate District 23, Democratic incumbent Matthea “Mattie” Daughtry, of Brunswick, is seeking reelection against Republican Bernard “Ben” Porter, of Harpswell. Daughtry, a third-term senator, is the current president of the Maine Senate. District 23 covers Harpswell, Brunswick, Freeport, Pownal, Chebeague Island and part of Yarmouth.

Four Cumberland County offices are on the ballot, with two contested races.

Incumbent District Attorney Jacqueline Sartoris, a Brunswick Democrat elected in 2022, faces Stephanie Anderson, an unenrolled candidate from Cape Elizabeth who previously held the office for 28 years as a Republican.

For the District 3 seat on the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, Democrat Amy Leshure, of Freeport, faces unenrolled candidate Robert Vail, of Cumberland. The five-member board oversees county finances and services.

Two incumbents are running without listed opponents: Democratic Sheriff Kevin Joyce, of Standish, and Democratic Judge of Probate Paul Aranson, of Scarborough. Both races allow write-in votes.

Harpswell voters may cast absentee ballots at the Town Office on Mountain Road during regular hours. The clerk’s office also will be open Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for absentee voting.

The regular absentee voting deadline is 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, unless special circumstances apply. Completed absentee ballots must reach the town by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Voters also can request absentee ballots online through the Maine Secretary of State’s Office.

Maine permits same-day voter registration at the polls. Those registering should bring identification and proof of residency.

The Town Clerk’s Office will be closed on Election Day because its staff will be working at the school.

Sample ballots and additional voting information are available at harpswell.maine.gov.
