In August, the Harpswell 250th Committee, with members from the Harpswell Historical Society, the town of Harpswell and more than a dozen community organizations, will present several events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All history is local, and celebrating the unique stories of Harpswell is the theme for these events.
On Saturday, Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., plan to tour eight historic churches, from Cundy’s Harbor to Orr’s and Bailey islands and Harpswell Neck. Hear the stories of churches from different eras and faith traditions to learn how worship has changed and flourished through the centuries. Meet at the Town Office between 11 a.m. and noon to receive map and tour information, or pick up information at marked churches.
At 4 p.m., all are invited to a community sing with the choirs of the Islands Community Church and the Elijah Kellogg Church at the Kellogg Church.
On Sunday, Aug. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., there will be a history tour on the schooner Alert. You can step back in time on a wooden fishing schooner and enjoy Harpswell history and lore as told by Gerry and Ron York while you sail Harpswell’s distinctive shoreline. Reservations are required. On Saturday, Aug. 15, tours of Harpswell burying grounds will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. See the graves of Harpswell’s Revolutionary War soldiers, ship captains and local characters. Slate, sandstone and granite markers with designs from skulls to anchors date from Colonial Harpswell until today. Meet at the Town Office from 11 a.m. until noon for a tour booklet and map, or pick them up at marked burying grounds.
