Moped operator suffers ‘serious injuries’ in crash on Great Island

A moped operator suffered “serious injuries” in a crash at a Great Island intersection the afternoon of Tuesday, May 26.

Louis C. Smith, 45, of Brunswick, was operating the black 2024 moped north on Cundy’s Harbor Road, toward the intersection with Harpswell Islands Road, when he “was unable to negotiate the turn” and crashed into a ditch at about 3:50 p.m., according to a statement from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He suffered “serious injuries” and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Smith was not wearing a helmet, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The agency said alcohol did not appear to have been a factor. The moped sustained minor damage.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, the Cundy’s Harbor Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash.

The incident remains under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
