Thanks for help after accident

Thank you to all the folks who stopped to help me when my car went off the road and into a snowbank past the Harpswell border and north of Mare Brook Farm on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at about 6:40 a.m.

It was 18 degrees and still very dark. My friend Dennis Denio stopped and was so kind. A young gal stopped and called my husband, as I did not have my phone with me.

Someone called the Brunswick Police Department, because a police officer showed up quite quickly. The officer stayed with me and called Atlantic Coast Towing, then directed traffic so I could get back on the road safely.

Even more people stopped and asked me if I was OK and if was there anything they could do. I can’t thank you enough!

Need for action is urgent

Protecting our community from fire and other safety emergencies is an essential municipal responsibility. As a volunteer with the Cundy's Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, I can personally attest to the growing challenges we face. Our department is critically understaffed with volunteer firefighters and there are no new Harpswell recruits enrolled in this year's fire academy. I anticipate that the town will increasingly need to rely on municipal firefighters as the number of volunteers continues to decline.

Providing critical care after disaster

Home fires don't stop for the holidays. In fact, they tend to spike nearly 20% because of seasonal risks. In Maine, 200-plus families experience devastating home fires every year. Every time a Mainer experiences this loss, the Red Cross will be there. I know because I am a Red Cross volunteer. Our disaster action team members respond at a moment's notice to comfort these families, providing critical care after the unimaginable happens.
