4 reasons to vote no

My husband and I have lived on Morse Shore Road for over 20 years. I’m from Maine and love this community dearly. I have started and restarted this letter probably a hundred times.

I write this because I want this community to really think about what a yes vote on Clark Cove will do … again. This is dividing us — just like Giant Stairs … just like Mitchell Field … just like Cedar Beach. Yes, again — the meetings, the stress, the nasty word exchanges, the judging of people.

I just don’t get it. You have hardworking and retired families that abut this property, yet a select few people want to spend your taxes to have more water access, which is already available at this spot and other spots less than 2 miles away.

There are four reasons to vote no:

  1. There is water access within 2 miles in both directions, for both hiking and boating.
  2. There are protected birds and wildlife that will be disturbed by cars, dogs, trash and foot traffic.
  3. To access the cove, one must use a narrow road in a neighborhood.
  4. Money. Don’t believe this won’t cost anything. Nothing is free.

This area is open now to whomever wants to enjoy it. Why add signs, a parking lot, no trespassing signs, directions and poop stations, all to threaten some incredible species of birds and wildlife? Leave it as it is.

The sign as you enter Harpswell says it’s a working community, not “home of Maine’s most trails and water access.” No one is denied access. Let’s keep Clark Cove pure and protected from unnatural growth, and let’s spend our money on our working community.

Chance to create valuable asset

Having listened to both sides of the ballot question about the building at Mitchell Field, I think I understand the merits of both sides. I urge a no vote to allow the group of interested citizens a chance to create a valuable asset for the future of Harpswell.
