Harpswell Santa Fund launches ‘Friends of Fishermen’ effort

The Harpswell Santa Fund is launching a new initiative to help young fishermen get their start in the industry.

The nonprofit, which distributes clothing, toys, heating fuel and food to residents facing hardship, is developing a separate fund called “Friends of Fishermen,” said its president, Mark Roesler.

“(Our) board was looking for a program to do some community-building,” Roesler said in an interview. “A couple of anonymous donors were interested in the legacy of fishermen in Harpswell.” Those donors want “to help young fishermen getting into the business — for education, licenses, business plans and such.”

Roesler said the nonprofit’s board of directors liked the idea and has taken steps to make it a reality. The fund has already assisted two local fishermen, he said.

The program is still a “work in progress,” with some details yet to be fleshed out, Roesler said. Even so, the group has definite plans to offer assistance with gear and clothing such as oilskins, boots and gloves. It may also purchase lobster traps for use by local fishermen.

Roesler said the fund’s organizers have met with town leaders, business owners and fishermen to get their insights on how Friends of Fishermen can best serve the community. One idea they came up with is to organize free training opportunities for those seeking a commercial fishing license.

“For instance, (there is a) Coast Guard safety course,” Roesler said. “We would reach out to them and try to get a group together so they could all meet at one of the libraries, possibly in Brunswick. And we would pay for the course.”

Town Recreation Director and Community Services Coordinator Katie Neal has agreed to serve as the point of contact for applicants seeking assistance, he added. Those interested in applying can email her at recreation@town.harpswell.me.us or call the Harpswell Town Office at 207-833-5771.
